Day 32 & Day 33

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 12:41 pm by Laurie Callsen

Today is my last day here OH MON DIEU!!!!!

I can’t believe it. I thought it would never be over.

Yesterday we had to take the placement exam over again, to make sure we progressed properly. It wasn’t for marks or anything. Compared to how I did at first, I did awesome ha ha ha. After that I did nothing. Had a nap, talked to mom on the phone, and hung out. We had a barbecue for my res. I forgot how delicious real meat is! At 9pm was the Souvenir Video. I was in it (for the talent show) so it was OBVIOUSLY amazing. hahahahaha. The end was really sad because it showed the girl getting on the bus looking all depressed to go home, and I realized how much I’m going to miss this place. It’s weird because 4 weeks ago I would have told you that I wouldn’t miss it at all, but now that the end is here I see how much fun it really was.

That said, all you immersion people who read this better keep in touch, damn it!!

Today my final was at 8am (the same time as my class everyday). I didn’t really find it hard at all. I took about half an hour or so. I can’t believe I never have to be in that labo again!!! There is the final information session at 1:30 at the theater (this is where we get our schedule for tomorrow for what times we leave, I think. Because there’s nothing else to talk about really). The banquet is at 6pm, and because all the food choices were really gross (fish, cordon bleu or “fiesta tofu”) I chose tofu, although I’ll probably just have salad. At 8pm is the burning of the contracts (WOOOO) and then the English Sorriee starts at 10pm. But really ut starts as soon as those bloody things burst into flames, because I think everyone is going to be so glad they can speak English again. It’s gonna be LOUD!I

I leave the school at 3am Halifax time (midnight SK time), leave Halifax at 7:50am (4:50 SK time) and arrive in Saskatoon at around noon.

See you tomorrow!!!

Day 31

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , at 4:28 pm by Laurie Callsen

So it’s officially been a month!!!!

I have nothing new to report really, other than I went swimming yesterday and saw how out of shape I was. Then I did nothing, really. Just hung out and stuff. In the evening the Taekwondo, Social and African dance Atiliers showcased their work. It was really awesome…. made me wish I could dance.

Today was our last day of classes. I am quite relieved actually, but MAN am I nervous for the final. I guess I don’t need the credit fro anything, but still. I like to feel smart and confident going into tests and I don’t. But it’s not til Friday morning, so I have plenty of time to study. But basically if I don’t know it by now I’m screwed, since I’ve been speaking the language for 5 weeks.

My plant gets in at 12:10 SK time, so I’ll be home around 3 or so (hopefully we can shop in Saskatoon for some stuff…. I need sheets for my bed in Edmonton etc.) I have no idea who is all coming to get me. Hopefully there’s room for me! I am going to leave here at 3 am. It takes 3 hours to get to Halifax, and my plane leaves at 7:50 NS time. So I need to be at the airport at 6:50, which means I should leave Pointe-de-l’Eglise at 3 am. I could probably make it if I left at 4 (a bus leaves every hour) but I don’t want to chance it.

Day 29 & 30

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , , at 3:49 pm by Laurie Callsen

I am getting really confused by not posting everyday!

Monday (yesterday) was a pretty routine day. Nothing exciting happened except that out atilier was only a half hour, not an hour and a half. Sweet!

Today was our second last day of classes. Tomorrow we have revision time in the labo, then Thursday we take retake the placement test that we had to take on the first day here, to see how we progressed. I am obviously going to do way better than before because I know more than 3 words of French.

On Friday is our final. I am really nervous, but I’m not gonna be overly worried because I’m not even using the credit for this course. Still, I’m not gonna slack just in case I decide to take a non-credit French course at MacEwan.

Today we did interviews. Most people did the whole celebrity thing (Opera and Britney Spears, etc) but Drew and I decided he was just going to interview me. So I talked about the only interesting thing I’ve ever done, which was shaving my head. It was interesting, to say the least. I don’t know if people really got it, but whatever.

3 more days!!!!!!

8 days and I’m 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Days 26-28

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 4:39 pm by Laurie Callsen

Okay, so I haven’t blogged in a while so I’ll just push the whole weekend together into one post.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 1

Friday was the 50s Soriee. After diner Jill and I hung out at Michaela’s room and pre-partied, made fun of people who are annoying (Qu’est-ce que tu fais? HAHAHA) and I drew on Michaela (she asked me to, don’t worry :D ) The actual soriee was pretty boring, so we went to the different res parties instead.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2

I went canoeing at 10am. That was fun. Then I came back and met up with Jill and Michaela again. Later on M & I fell asleep on the grass outside the residences after supper. Then I heard some very familier, very ENGLISH music. Some girl had put on ‘What Is Love’ by the Haddaways and was pumping it through her iPod speakers and started to dance to it. There were about 4 profs/animateurs standing outside one of the residences. They just looked at each other and were like ‘WTF??’ and the chick got an advertissment. She was either really dumb or did it on purpose. Which is dumb.

After that incident we went to the Café Bric-a-Brac and played tile Rummy with a girl from M’s res, and then went back to her res to play some more cards and pig out on chips. J & M went to the soriees (there were two) while I went to bed, because the Haute-Mer was at 8am the next morning.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 (aka today)

Whale-watching at 8am. It was really cold out on the ocean, but I did see some whales and seals. I didn’t get any pictures of the whales because they move too goddamn fast, but I did get a video and some pictures of the seals. Then I fell asleep on the boat (the cabin was nice and warm). I was so hungry when we left that the whole time I had a stomachache because I needed food in my belly. So when I got to the cafeteria I gobbled down some food. Then I went to the labo, then here.

My weekend was very entertaining.

5 days left!

Day 25

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , at 7:20 pm by Laurie Callsen

1 more weekend (because next weekend doesn’t count.

4 more school days (apparently there’s no classes next Thursday and Friday)

4 more tests (I think. Definitely one tomorrow OMD. That’s «Oh Mon Dieu» by the way)

8 more days ( Saturday doesn’t count because I’m leaving so early)

I am totally gonna miss the people here, as well as the campus. The fear of being kicked out and the constant French, not so much. To everyone at home, I apologize in advance for my Franglais (where you stick random French words in your English sentences without realising it). It’s gonna happen, but this way you can pick up a little French too lol.

AH so many good times. This place would have been way cooler in English, I have to admit. But laughing at the bad grammer is okay. And the stealthyness of Jill.

Day 24

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 10:15 pm by Laurie Callsen

My foot feels a lot better today. I think it was just tender yesterday from the scraping.

Yesterday for our Atelier we walked to the beach (the same beach as Sunday’s incident). Which was ten minutes away. And I had to wear my hot shoes (aka Converse) because I didn’t want any sand in my wound. Anyway I was really mad at the time because my foot hurt like hell, but I’m over it now.

Today for our Atelier we went to a lake. I went canoing and it was lots of fun.

Only 9 more days!!! 5 more classes!

It’s been fun but it’s time for me to come home, make a little money and move to Edmonton. I hope it’s a little colder at home (at least in the house) because it is CRAZY hot in my dorm room. It sucks. Really truly does.

Sorry for the short post, but nothing has happened since yesterday, except that Jill attempted to eat my face and another boy got expelled.

Day 22 & 23

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , , at 3:50 pm by Laurie Callsen

OK, so this will also be known as the “foot post”.

On Sunday I went to the beach with some friends and went swimming. I cut my feet on the barnacles while  I was in the water. Then I walked back to my towel (on the sand, obviously). And I got sand in my feet. When I got back to the school I found a first aid kit and got some sand but not all out of the cuts, and bandaged it up. On Monday (Yesterday) it hurt even worse and I could barely walk.

I found a prof who in turn found someone to drive me to the doctor. After waiting for a half an hour for her to show up, I was driven to Weymouth. The doctor cleaned my foot up, scraped the sand out with some Tweezers (or other sharp metal object) and bandaged me up. I have to take my antibiotics 4 times a day. 1 hour before or 3 hours after eating, for 7 days. I can’t get my foot wet for two days. I can’t walk barefoot on the sand for 10 days (but by the time that’s up I’ll be home).

So that’s the story. It was insanely difficult to shower with one leg today while the other (my right leg) was hanging out of the bathtub.

I’m glad this didn’t happen at the beginning of the week or I would have been freaking out and wanting to come home (or at least even more than I was then)

Today has been a little difficult. There’s a lot of stairs here and the elevators are broken most of the time. I need to wash clothes but don’t want to walk to the bank to get change (I’m gonna ask Jill to come with me, just in case). I feel like such a baby, but I’m glad mom made me go to the doctor or else it would’ve gotten way worse. I’m trying to be independent and not have people help me. There’s not much they can do besides carry me, and that’s a little much.

I’m glad me foot will be a little better by the time I’m back in P’tit Bois. Although, I might lie a little bit so I can go with Nicole again :D .

10 days and I’m home.

14 days and I’m 18.

Holy crap

Day 21 (AKA WEEK 4)

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , at 7:56 pm by Laurie Callsen

And so we begin week 4. Two weeks ’til home time people!!

I had an AWESOME time at Casino Night. It was so much fun, and hilarious. I was losing hardcore and then some man dumped all his chips into my cup. Unfortunately it wasn’t real money (actually that’s probably a good thing) and you used the money you accumulated to buy stuff at an auction. I only had 600$ and wasn’t really into sticking around to auction (because my numbers suck in French. i can only count to 30. Which is good, considering I could only count to 13 three weeks ago). So I stuck my money in Neha’s cup and Michaela, Jill and I went to the Castelet for pizza and giant cookies, then to the computer lab. (Cookie side note: the thing was bigger than my face. Honest to God, it was huge. And I ate it ALL.)

Today I woke up at 11 and slowly got ready for my day. Then Michaela and Jill showed up and invited me to the beach. In order to fulfill my dream of swimming in every ocean (well maybe not the Arctic) I went along. It was tons of fun, splashing in the frigid water. And stepping on the barnacles and tearing my feet to shreds. Then salt water and sand got into my feet (which look like they were attacked by a cheese grater) and the 10 minute walk back to school really sucked. But I found a First Aid kit and cleaned myself up. It’s weird, using my First Aid skills on myself. Like most lifeguards you never think you’re gonna need that for you.

Then Jill & Michaela & I walked (so much walking today OMG) to the lil Ice Cream place across the street. Jill went to do laundry after and Michaela and I walked around the festival being held on the grounds. It made me excited for this fall – I now plan on coming down to Bently in September to meet Mom and Auntie Val for the annual Farmers Market. I LOVE Farmers Markets!!!

Tonight is the Night of Terror walk in P’tit Bois. I was going to go, but now with a bum foot I am going to have a movie night with M&J.

Tomorrow is the second last Monday here!

Day 20

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , , , at 9:43 pm by Laurie Callsen

Two weeks from now I’ll be at home!

Today we went to Port Royal and Grand-Pré. Port Royal was a trading post or the harbour where Champlain landed (the tour guide spoke in French, so I basically jsut stood there. I had no idea what was going on).

Then we went to Grand-Pré. Grand-Pré was so interesting. I felt really bad because I didn’t know anything about The Great Upheaval. It’s not included in the school curriculum, so it feels like only Acadia’s know about what happened. (To find out more, Google “The Great Upheaval”). It opened a whole big can of worms in my mind about the government (mainly Saskatchewan, but my friend from BC hadn’t been taught about it either) and what they teach us. It was really a shame. Canada’s history isn’t as squeaky clean as they teach us in school.

I had lots of fun at Halloween last night, but I didn’t stay ling because a) I had to get up early because the bus left for Port Royal at 8am and b) my dress was a little small (but looked great) and it was difficult to breathe in. Which isn’t the best thing for dancing. So I went to bed, and slept on the bus both there and back.  Tonight is Casino night, and I am going to go and stay for the whole time, damn it!! I haven’t done that yet. So I’m not going to have another nap beforehand or I’ll never get to sleep tonight.

Day 19 (Halloween)

Posted in Summer 2008, Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 4:39 pm by Laurie Callsen

Yesterday was so hot and humid!!! I’m not used to that so it really sucked. I was very sticky and sweaty all day. Yesterday for our Atiliers Nicole took us to a river to go swimming. It was so nice! The water was the perfect temperature and everything. Nicole is really fun for workshops. I wish I had her the first week so I could have her again the last week. Alas, my first week was P’tit Bois, which is French for “little woods” and “slave labour”. Nicole told us to bring our dictionaries today, but I have no idea what we’re doing. I’m excited though! I don’t think it’s going to be boring, whatever it is.

In school news, I am one step closer to registering for classes. I’m waiting for the school to release the hold on my account, and then I’m done!! The first semester I only have one 8am class, and nothing at all on Fridays :D

So…. yeah, NS is pretty good. Tonight is Halloween. Today at the Session d’Information, two people pretended to be on a date in some haunted area. Then all the animateurs busted in dressed as Zombies. Zach bailed out and left his “girlfriend” to be eaten. They ate her brains and then I could hear some soft, familiar music in the background – THRILLER!!!! It was so frickin’ hilarious, and I totally called it too.

Tonight my costume is going to be a (possibly dead) little Goth girl. Pretty sweet stuff. AND I GET CANDY!!!!!!!

I am excited.
